Question: Is my child too young for Music Together?
Answer: No.
Music Together is program for children from newborn to 4 years old. A child’s musical development starts at birth and is the same as our speech development. Children need to be exposed to different sounds, tones, melodies and rhythms between the ages of 0-3 for their musical development.
Question: Do I have to participate?
Parent participation is of the utmost importance. Children learn through observing, experimenting and imitating. If a child’s caregiver is uninterested and not participating, the child will most likely not participate. If a parent is participating the child will be more likely to participate. At times your child may wonder but if mom is playing an instrument and singing, then your child will be curious as to what you are doing and will wonder back and imitate you.
Question: Does my child have to sit on my lap and pay attention?
Answer: No.
Children learn through play, Your child may sit or move around the classroom during the entire class. But when your child gets home, they know the words and the movement to the song and chants. This is because the musical process is very much like your ability to speak. Your child is absorbing all that is around him/her even though they seem to be uninterested.
Your child may take in information in class and then express everything that happens in class at home. This is very common. After the 4th or 5th week your child may seem more interested during the class. If this doesn’t happen don’t worry. The progress to look for is when your child is out of class. Does your child sing, clap, make more sounds, or move when music is played.
Answer: It doesn’t matter.
Just sing anyway. It’s very important for your child to see you singing and dancing so your child will feel it is okay for them to sing and dance in a social setting. It is also important to play the CD and the Tape frequently at home so you and your child are familiar with the songs in class.
Question: Why are the classes of mixed ages important?
Answer: Classes of mixed ages are important because research has shown that child learn better in mixed age groups.
Research has shown that children will imitate another child before they imitate another adult. So the younger children look to the older children for role models. Also this gives the older child the opportunity to be a role model and mentor, and builds self–esteem because imitation is the greatest compliment.
